Dell C610 Touchpad Problem

Re: Dell C610 Touchpad Problem
This is a known problem and isn't Ubuntu related - it's hardware. The problem is with the stick in the middle of the keyboard (to use the polite term!) It is very well known on all the C series latitudes and there are two answers:

1 - But the cable leading from the stick to the main board
2- Buy a new keyboard

For option one, remove the CD drive, then remove all the screws marked K from the underside of the laptop. Now, using your fingers, poke the keyboard out. You will now see the two ribbon strips, one thick and one thin. Cut the thin one and cover the ends with tape. Now refit the keyboard, slotting the F-key edge in first then press firmly along the bottom- you'll hear some clicks as it snaps into place. Finally, put all the screws back in. Problem solved.

For option 2, remove the keyboard as detailed above and purchase a new one at about £90/$180. Fit as detailed above. Admire shiny new keyboard whilst sobbing over hole in bank balance. Be sure to avoid tears in contact with keyboard or repeat option 2.
